The Story of Lulu's: Where Heritage Meets Modern Asian American Identity

Lulu Modern Chinese celebrates the experience of growing up Asian American rooted in tradition, shaped by modern culture, and living between two worlds. Lulu, featured in our murals, embodies that duality: one moment dressed in chic Chinese opera, the next in modern fashion. She represents heritage, confidence, beauty, and reinvention.

Lulu, is our muse woven throughout our murals, embodies this duality: one moment adorned in classic Chinese opera, the next styled in modern fashion. She represents heritage and reinvention, confidence and beauty, honoring the past while redefining modern Chinese dining today.

Lulu is more than a restaurant. She is the expression of modern, proudly Asian American cuisine rooted in tradition and reimagined for today.

My girlfriends and I came in w/o any expectations, but were surely impressed with the presentation and flavors of each dish! Make sure to order the Peking duck ahead of time. The crepe for it was very thin and delicious with a great chewy texture. Our server Michael was very helpful and the owner Sunny was so friendly! We all said we would def come back to try other items!

We decided to dine at Lulu Modern Chinese for our 11th year anniversary instead of at a fancy prime steakhouse as we usually do and we were taken aback by our experience. Pricey? Absolutely, for a modern take on traditional Chinese. But you pay for the experience and atmosphere more than anything else. The food was great, don't get me wrong and the drinks are absolutely showstoppers, nothing but top shelf used here. Lulu has a little bit of everything for everyone (unless you're vegetarian or vegan), with a decent dumpling menu to whet your appetite. We ordered a Peking Duck experience (more on this later), braised beef rib, side of egg fried rice, traditional pork XLB (full of broth, arrived perfectly warm and not piping hot), shrimp shumai and five drinks (Ube? You May!, Yuzu Margarita, Tokyo Drift, Wayfinder and Penicillin [which is tea infused, but cleverly tastes like Mezcal]). The Peking Duck experience is served with a side of 16 thin Chinese pancakes, thinly sliced scallion whites, Persian cucumber sticks, sugar and Hoisin sauce. The presenter will flambé and then slice up your duck into thin presentable pieces before your server serves the platter to you. You can eat the sliced duck however you wish, but you'd take a piece of duck and make a mini taco/spring roll with the pancake and sides. I believe Lulu only serves 20 Peking Duck experiences per day, so you'll need to reserve it as an add-on through OpenTable ($108). Lulu does not have a dedicated kids menu, but there are plenty of kids-friendly food items. Our 9 yo son ate 1/3 of the Peking Duck and half of the egg fried rice (along with a pork XLB and shrimp shumai). On busy nights, such as 6PM on a Saturday, the bar can be stretched to the limit and you may wait up to 10 minutes before your server returns with your Asashi or cocktails. Overall we enjoyed our 2 hours spent at Lulu Chinese Modern and definitely will return for special occasions. Next time we'll order their grilled lamb and fried red snapper.

I really want to like this restaurant, I really do. But unfortunately this is not an authentic Chinese restaurant, instead it is highly Americanized. Because I want to help them get better, I’m going to critique some dishes in a more detailed fashion. The chili wonton has no kick in it at all, and they added way too much vinegar and unbalanced. The black truffle stewed egg, I’m pretty sure the chef forgot to season the steamed egg. It is extremely bland and has no flavor at all. Braised beef is definitely the best dish for the meal, I actually like it a lot so I highly recommend ordering it. The crab tofu on the other hand was disappointing. The flavor is there but one the tofu are cut in way too big of pieces, two it has very little sauce. Will I give them a second chance? Maybe, but I don’t have high hopes.

We had a wonderful experience for my sister’s birthday here! Food was great (and we are picky Asians)! Service was impeccable. Kirsten was so patient and kind and on-point with everything. Thank you so much! Would return for sure!

Incredible food and service! Every dish was top notch, and our waitress and multiple wait staff took excellent are of me and my wife. The bar area is definitely a little lively on the weekends, so don’t go on the weekends if you aren’t a fan of louder environments.

We had a great experience at Lulu Modern Chinese. The service was fantastic from start to finish, and the atmosphere was excellent. The food is a bit different from your typical Chinese restaurant, and I think it really depends on your palate. Personally, I loved it. The flavors are bold, creative, and well executed. The duck was my favorite dish, but it does require a more adventurous palate. The rest of my family wasn’t a fan of the duck, although they all agreed the fried rice was absolutely delicious. If you’re looking to try something a little different and enjoy modern takes on Chinese cuisine, I would definitely recommend giving Lulu a try.
